To celebrate the 50th anniversary of UWC in Hong Kong, and the 30th anniversary of LPCUWC, the UWC Graduates Organization (UWCGO) will host a Gala Dinner on 13 May 2023, at the prestigious heritage site of Asia Society. It will be a special evening to reconnect with UWC friends and the mission that has made us who we are today.
We are delighted to have Professor Kishore Mahbubani joining the dinner as the Keynote Speaker, to speak on a topic highly relevant to the UWC mission: "Peace in the future of Asia Pacific". Together with him, our Guest of Honour, Mr Bernard Chan and the esteemed Ms Teresa Ma will join a panel discussion on how governments, business and civil society organisations may collaborate to tackle common challenges in the region.

Mr Chan is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Before joining the Government, he held a number of public service positions including member of the Legislative Council and Chairman of Legal Aid Services Council.
Mr Chan served as Secretary for Development from July 2012 to January 2017. He has been Financial Secretary since 2017.
Professor Kishore
Mahbubani
Professor Mahbubani is a world-renowned expert in international relations. He is Singapore’s former Ambassador to the United Nations and served as President of the UN Security Council in that capacity. Author of eight books, including “Has China Won?” and “Can Asians Think?”, he speaks as well as he writes. His talks have been viewed several million times on YouTube. He is also a strong supporter of UWC, having served on the UWCSEA Board of Governors. During the Gala Dinner, he will deliver the keynote speech, sharing insights into the common challenges we face in the region and plausible ways out despite rising geopolitical tensions.
Mr Bernard Charnwut
Chan, GBM, GBS, JP
Mr Chan is a Hong Kong deputy to the National People’s Congress of The People’s Republic of China and the previous Convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council (2017-2022). He is a former non-official member of Hong Kong’s Executive Council (2004-09 and 2012-2022) and former member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (1998-2008) representing the insurance industry.
A graduate of Pomona College in California, he is the Chairman & President of the publicly-listed Asia Financial Holdings and Chairman of Asia Insurance. He is Chairman of the Hong Kong – Thailand Business Council and an advisor to Bangkok Bank (China) Co. Ltd. He sits on the boards of several local and overseas companies in financial services and is a director of Bumrungrad Hospital Public Company in Thailand.
Mr Chan has a long record of public service, including as Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. A patron of the arts, he is Chairman M Plus Museum Ltd. and Tai Kwun Culture & Arts Co. Ltd. He is also a Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Chronicles Institute and Executive Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of Our Hong Kong Foundation.
Ms Teresa Ma
Ms Ma is founder and director of Peace Generation, a civil society organisation that delivers peace education and promotes conflict management, resolution and transformation.
Ms Ma is one of very few in Hong Kong who have undertaken formal peace and conflict training. Her work is rooted in the belief that peace is a collective, everyday endeavour.
Before turning to peace work, she was a partner and an elected board member of a global law firm, advising on complex transactions out of London, Hong Kong and Shanghai. She has also qualified as a mediator.
